Anti-Corruption Commission Seychelles (ACCS) Celebrates Global Achievement: Seychelles Recognised as the Least Corrupt Country in Africa
Victoria, Seychelles - 11th February 2025. The Anti-Corruption Commission Seychelles (ACCS) proudly acknowledges the nation's significant improvement in the Transparency International Corruption Perception Index (CPI) 2024, which ranks Seychelles as the 18th least corrupt country in the world. In the global ranking system, Seychelles also retains its position as the least corrupt country in Africa. This remarkable achievement reflects Seychelles' unwavering commitment to transparency, accountability, and good governance. Since the passing of the Anti-Corruption Act in 2016 and the creation of the ACCS, Seychelles has emerged as a beacon of integrity and an example for the African continent, demonstrating that robust anti-corruption measures, strong institutions, and active citizen participation can yield tangible results.
The Transparency International CPI evaluates 180 countries based on perceived levels of corruption in the public sector, using data from reputable sources. Seychelles' rise in global standing underscores the continued success of collaborative efforts between the ACCS, public ministries departments and agencies, civil society organisations and international partners to combat corruption at all levels.
Tackling Corruption: A National Priority
Speaking on this milestone, the Commissioner of the ACCS, May De Silva, said: "Corruption is a pervasive issue that disrupts societies, stifles growth, and damages the trust people have in their institutions. As a nation, Seychelles has taken decisive action to ensure that corruption has no place in our governance structures. Whilst we all appreciate rooting out corruption is a slow process with many factors that seek to impede our fight, this recognition by Transparency International reinforces our resolve to uphold the principles of transparency, integrity, and justice. The ACCS recognises that while this continued achievement is worth celebrating, we need to highlight that the fight against corruption is far from over. Tackling corruption requires constant vigilance, strong enforcement of laws, and ongoing public engagement to foster a culture of integrity.
Being recognised as the 18th least corrupt country in the world is an achievement that belongs to every Seychellois. However, I wish to take this opportunity to again remember Denis Joubert, the former Deputy Commissioner who worked tirelessly as part of our collective determination to protect our values, resources, and future generations. Together, we must sustain this momentum and remain steadfast in our efforts to eradicate corruption."
